Sarasota resident and Cardinal Mooney High School pitcher Sean McAdams, the Orioles' 14th round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, officially joined the organization in June with a contract signing at Ed Smith Stadium. The 18-year-old is playing with the Gulf Coast League Orioles this summer at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.

"It has been my dream to become a professional baseball player. To start my career with a fine organization like the Orioles -- and in my hometown -- is beyond my expectations," McAdams said during a press conference with local media.

Jim Thrift, the Orioles scout who signed McAdams, noted that the 6'6", 215-pound right-handed pitcher demonstrated both athletic talent and an ability to develop as a pitcher and ballplayer.

"I also liked that he was quarterback of his high school football team, which shows me he has some leadership skills," said Thrift, who lives in Sarasota and became aware of McAdams through relationships in the community.

McAdams' parents, Ann McAdams and Jack Jakuboski, attended the press conference and beamed with pride as their son fielded questions from reporters and posed for photographs.

"Sean grew up playing Cal Ripken baseball across 12th Street from Ed Smith Stadium," Ann McAdams said. "We know he has a long way to go to reach the Major Leagues, but he is willing to work hard. We just couldn't be happier for him, and we are grateful to his coaches at Cardinal Mooney for all they've done to help develop his talent."

McAdams was the 432nd overall selection in the Draft. He pitched in relief for Cardinal Mooney and also played first base.

Gulf Coast League Orioles games at Ed Smith Stadium are open to the public at no cost. Parking also is free and located in the east lot. Spectators may enter the stadium through the east gate. Click here to view the season schedule »
