Tributes to 2001 team and Seattle Sonics among special events on deck for Mariners fans this season 02/02/2011 5:03 PM ET
With pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training less than two weeks from today, the Seattle Mariners announced a slate of special events for the 2011 season with some fan favorites including two bobbleheads and tributes to two important parts of Seattle's sports history-the 116 win 2001 Mariners and the Sonics.
The fun begins on Opening Night, Friday, April 8, as the Mariners meet the Cleveland Indians. All fans will receive a 2011 magnetic schedule courtesy of Safeco Insurance. More details about special pregame programming for Opening Night will be released in coming weeks.
Tributes and Legends
In addition to giveaways, the Mariners are planning a couple of tributes this season. On Saturday, July 16, when the Mariners take on the Texas Rangers, there will be a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Mariners American League record 116 win season. Former General Manager Pat Gillick, Jay Buhner, Dan Wilson, John Olerud, Mark McLemore, Jeff Nelson, Bret Boone, Jamie Moyer and other members of the 2001 team will be on hand for a special pregame ceremony, and the first 20,000 fans will receive a T-shirt featuring the commemorative 10th Anniversary logo.
Friday, July 29, Mariners fans have a chance to celebrate the Seattle Sonics. Legendary players from the franchise's 41-year history will be saluted in a pregame ceremony as the Mariners, and Sonics fans pay tribute once more to the Green & Gold.
Saturday, April 9, the first 20,000 fans will receive a Felix Hernandez Cy Young Bobblehead, courtesy of ROOT SPORTS™. The bobblehead features a smiling Felix Hernandez holding a tiny replica of his 2010 American League Cy Young plaque. A second bobblehead giveaway is on the schedule for Friday, May 6, when the Mariners take on the Chicago White Sox. The first 25,000 fans will receive an Ichiro Hit Counter Bobblehead, courtesy of ROOT SPORTS™. Ichiro is perched atop a mini-tote board fans can reset each day to keep track of his hits as Ichiro pursues his record 11th consecutive 200 hit season.
Mariners "Go Green"
On Monday and Friday home games, the Mariners will wear Northwest Green alternate jerseys, and there are three promotions that play off that theme. On Friday, June 3, the first 20,000 fans will receive a "Go Green" train car, the 12th in the series of Mariners collectable train cars. On Friday, June 17, the first 20,000 fans will receive an Ichiro green jersey replica T-shirt. And on Friday, August 26, the first 15,000 fans 21 and older will receive a green Mariners fleece blanket. Fans are also encouraged to join the "Green" team by wearing green to Monday and Friday games.
Mariners beloved broadcaster Dave Niehaus dubbed Franklin Gutierrez "Death to Flying Things" for his ability to run down anything that dared enter his airspace of centerfield. Taking a cue from that colorful characterization, on Thursday, May 19, the first 20,000 fans will get their own Franklin Gutierrez-shaped flyswatter with a giant glove on the "business end."
Viva Las Vargas
Other highlights of the 2011 Mariners special events are:
Mariners fans can get their best Elvis on as Safeco Field channels the Entertainment Capital of the World on Friday, May 27, on Viva Las Vargas Night. It's a tip of the cap to Mariners starting pitcher Jason Vargas, and an opportunity for fans to win great prizes including trips to Las Vegas. The first 10,000 fans will also receive ultra cool Elvis-style shades.
- Saturday, April 23, Salute to Armed Forces Night presented by The Boeing Company
