Game Recap |
 |
The National League combined a 10-hit attack with effective pitching to capture its fourth straight All-Star Game. The offensive hero was St. Louis Cardinal Enos Slaughter, who rapped two singles, earned one walk, scored twice and drove in one run. Former Negro League legend Satchel Paige, just 47-years-young, pitched the eighth inning for the American League.

1953: Rough Day for Satchel

The National League continued to dominate the Midsummer Classic as they won for the fourth straight time. Cincinnati's Crosley Field played host to the game, and it looked like a pitcher's duel from the very beginning. Neither team managed to push a run across until the bottom of the fifth, when the NL scored twice off of the Yankees' Allie Reynolds. The NL added a run in the seventh off of Mike Garcia, before treating 47-old Satchel Paige roughly in his All-Star debut, getting three hits and two runs off the wily veteran to stake a 5-0 lead after eight frames. The AL avoided the shutout in the ninth however, as they managed to squeeze three hits together before falling by a final of 5-1.
