CAREER: Became a member of the Major League staff in 1986...appointed a Crew Chief in 2007...has worked the Division Series (1996, 97, 98, 2001-02, 06-09), League Championship Series (1993, 99-01), World Series (1998, 2002, 2008) and the All-Star Game (1992, 2002)...was behind the plate for Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter vs. the Astros on September 14, 2008 in a game relocated to Milwaukee's Miller Park...it was the second no-hitter he called (other was one of Nolan Ryan's, on May 1, 1991)...is one of only five active Major League umpires who have worked multiple no-hitters (others through 2011: Eric Cooper, Jeff Kellogg and Ted Barrett); Brian Runge joined in April 2012...was an instructor at MLB's inaugural Umpire Camps (MLBUC.com), held at MLB's Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California, in November 2006...attended the Brinkman Umpire School in 1981...umpired in the California League (1981-82), Southern League (1983), Dominican Winter League (1983-84), Caribbean World Series (1984), and American Association (1983-86)...is one of three umpires to have worked an all-time high 10 Division?Series, along with current umpire Gerry Davis and the retired Bruce Froemming.
PERSONAL: Born in May 1960 in Minnesota...resides in Wisconsin...married to Barbara has two children, Alicia and Alexandra graduated from Cretin Derham High School in St. Paul, the same school as fellow umpire Mark Wegner attended St. Thomas University involved in the JROTC for four years in high school, attaining a rank of Cadet Lt. Colonel works with Meals on Wheels and Catholic charities honored as the Sportsman of the Year in 1989 and 1993 as voted by the Twin Cities Hot Stovers in 2007, he was inducted into the Catholic Athletic Association's Hall of Fame in St. Paul...also was honored as Man of the Year, along with Gerry Davis and Bruce Froemming, by the Wisconsin State High School Baseball Coaches Association...has met the last five U.S. Presidents...proudest moment as an umpire was working the 1998 World Series played baseball through high school...enjoys woodcarving, carpentry, golf and snowmobiling in the off-season.
