PEORIA, Ariz. -- Mariners outfielder Chris Snelling suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand during the first day of batting practice on Thursday and will miss the remainder of Spring Training.

The "hook of hamate" was removed Friday morning. Dr. Larry Pedegana, the Mariners medical director, observed the operation by hand specialist Dr. Beth Purdy.

A Mariners spokesperson said the surgery went well and Snelling, who previously broke the hamate bone which never completely healed, could be sidelined for about six weeks.

Snelling was injured just three swings into the first round of live batting practice on one of the fields at the Peoria Sports Complex.

Melvin said he talked to Snelling Friday morning and the 22-year-old Australian was stunned by the latest setback in a career that has been hampered by injuries.

"He is down, understandably," Melvin said. "Three swings in the batting cage and he faces another surgery."
