A former Major League manager and general manager are joining the Mariners' front office staff.

Former Dodgers GM Dan Evans, who has worked for the Mariners on a part-time basis for most of this year, and John Boles, the manager of the Florida Marlins from 1999-2001, have been hired as special assistants to GM Bill Bavasi.

"These two guys have a tremendous amount of baseball knowledge and experience," Bavasi said. "We are extremely fortunate to be able to bring them on board in our baseball operations department. Both will be focused on scouting Major League talent and our minor league clubs. They will be very instrumental in the construction of our Major League roster."

Evans spent most of this past season in an advisory role with the Mariners, primarily scouting the California League and the Mariners minor league system. From 2001-2003, he was an executive with the Dodgers, including two years as the general manager and one as a senior adviser to the general manager.

He is credited with putting together the Dodgers team that captured the National West championship this season.

Evans previously spent 19 years in the White Sox organization in several capacities, including serving as assistant general manager and director of baseball operations from 1988-2000. Prior to joining the Dodgers, Evans had stints with the Cubs as a baseball operations consultant and with Major League Baseball, assisting in the preparation of Major League club salary arbitration cases. He also worked with Fox Sports Net in Chicago as a studio analyst.

"Danny is very bright and energetic," Bavasi said. "He has been successful in several roles and has earned a great amount of respect throughout the industry. He had the opportunity to look at our system last season, and he will be another great resource in evaluating players to build our organization at all levels."

The 56-year-old Boles spent the past three years as a senior adviser of baseball operations with the Dodgers after his managerial stint with the Marlins ended. He also was interim manager of the Marlins in 1996, and spent six years managing in the minor leagues in the White Sox and Royals organizations from 1981-1986. In addition to his on-field work, Boles has worked in various front office capacities with Kansas City, Montreal and Florida, including serving as vice president of player development with the Marlins.

"John is highly regarded in this business," Bavasi said. "He's done almost everything on the baseball side, from being a field manager to having front office executive positions. He will be a tremendous asset for our organization."
