After spending 10 days at Triple-A Tacoma to work on his mechanics, Joel Pineiro returns to the Mariners on Tuesday to face the AL East-leading Orioles.

Pineiro has given up six runs in each of his last two starts and has an ERA of 7.23 in the month of May. Still, the Mariners remain confident that Pineiro has the ability to become the ace of their pitching staff.

In his last start, Pineiro lasted just 3 2/3 innings against the Red Sox. It was his shortest outing since pitching 2 2/3 against the Indians Aug. 6 last season, a span of 15 starts.

Player to watch
Jeremy Reed broke out of an 0-for-7 skid Sunday by going 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. It marked Reed's second three-hit game in May. Reed is a career .472 batter on the road although he has never faced the Orioles before.
