Mariners' bats silent in loss to A's
Vina drives in lone run; Pineiro effective in return

Monday, March 20 A's at the plate: Antonio Perez hit a home run and drove in four runs. Jay Payton added a two-run home run, and Adam Melhuse doubled home a run. Mariners at the plate: Fernando Vina drove in the Mariners' lone run and Roberto Petagine doubled for their only extra-base hit. A's on the mound: Rich Harden struck out seven in five innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked three. Mariners on the mound: Joel Pineiro was effective in his first outing since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He gave up two earned runs on four hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out two. Cactus League records: A's 8-11; Mariners 6-11. Up next: Right-hander Dan Haren (0-1, 7.30 ERA) makes his fifth start on Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. PT when the A's travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to meet the San Francisco Giants. Left-hander Noah Lowry pitches for the Giants. Left-hander Jarrod Washburn (0-0, 1.00 ERA) makes his fourth start for the Mariners in Peoria, Ariz., on Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. PT against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Right-hander Miguel Batista is scheduled to pitch for Arizona.
