at Peoria, Ariz.
March 15, 20O9

White Sox at the plate: A nine-run second inning featured a two-run triple by Carlos Quentin and three-run home run by Wilson Betemit, his fourth of the spring. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski drove in a pair of runs in the second-inning uprising, and singled in the fifth to raise his spring batting average to .440. Josh Kroeger contributed a walk, single and home run.

Mariners at the plate: First baseman Russell Branyan put the Mariners on the board in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run home run to right-center. The blast scored Yuniesky Betancourt, who led off with a single. Branyan went deep again in the seventh inning and Mike Morse hit the next pitch for a home run. Ken Griffey Jr. struck out, flied out and singled to center against the team he finished last season with.

White Sox on the mound: Right-handed starter Jose Contreras was sharp during a scoreless two-inning stint. He surrendered one hit and struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Right-hander Mike McDougal worked one spotless inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Mariners on the mound: Left-hander Garrett Olson was all over the place in a wobbly 1 2/3-innings outing. He walked five batters, leading to seven earned runs. His ERA went from 6.75 to 15.88. Right-hander Miguel Batista pitched a scoreless inning, but he walked two as Seattle's ongoing control woes continued. The Mariners are second to the Rangers in the American League in walks allowed.

Cactus League records: Mariners 7-8-1, White Sox 10-8.

Up next: For the first time since returning to the Mariners, Ken Griffey Jr. will play back-to-back games, starting in the designated hitter spot against the Dodgers in a split-squad game Monday afternoon (1:05 p.m. PT) at Peoria Stadium. Left-hander Erik Bedard returns to action and is scheduled to pitch one inning. He has been sidelined with a sore muscle in his right buttocks.

Meanwhile, in Goodyear, right-hander Chris Jakubauskas gets the start in a 1:05 p.m. (PT) game against the Indians.
