CHICAGO -- After throwing lightly from a distance of 90 feet on Sunday, Pirates reliever Tyler Yates said that barring any unforeseen setbacks he expects to be able to come off the disabled list May 31, the first day that he is eligible to do so.Yates was put on the DL on May 16 with right elbow inflammation, an ailment he had been trying to pitch through for much of the first part of the season.
"I'm feeling much better than [Friday]," Yates said.
It was on Friday that Yates first began throwing after having rested his arm for a week. After Friday's throwing session, Yates admitted to feeling a bit more soreness than he had expected.
Back on track now, Yates is tentatively scheduled to throw from 120 feet on Monday, followed by a light side session on Tuesday and a full side session on Wednesday. Those plans are contingent, of course, on how well he is feeling. Thursday is scheduled to be an off-day for Yates, before he would pitch a simulated game on Friday.
Yates, who has served primarily as the Pirates' right-handed setup man, has a 7.50 ERA and 0-2 record in 12 innings this year. He's walked seven and struck out nine.
