Griffey scratched from lineup
Sweeney replaces veteran as DH, cleanup hitter
SEATTLE -- The lineup posted on the bulletin board outside manager Don Wakamatsu's office at Safeco Field had Ken Griffey Jr. batting fourth as the designated hitter. But the lineup that was presented to the umpires prior to the Mariners' Interleague game against the D-backs was different. Mike Sweeney was the cleanup hitter and the DH.
Griffey, who had played left field in the final five games of the recent nine-game road trip, apparently was scratched because he had fluid drained from one of his knees on Friday. He did not start the series opener against Arizona, but did make an appearance in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter, smacking a game-tying, two-run home run to highlight a four-run rally and a 4-3 Mariners victory. It was the sixth pinch-hit home run of Griffey's MLB career and the 618th circuit blast overall. Griffey presumably was available for pinch-hitting duty again on Saturday night.
