The Giants claimed infielder Tony Abreu off outright waivers from the Royals on Monday.
Kansas City had designated the 28-year-old Abreu for assignment on Jan. 25 after he spent most of last season at the club's Triple-A Omaha affiliate, posting a .322/.347/.492 batting line in 103 games. Abreu also appeared in 22 big league games, splitting time between second base, third base and shortstop while hitting .257 (18-for-70) with one home run and 15 RBIs.
The Dominican Republic native also has spent time with the Dodgers and D-backs since debuting in the Majors in 2007. In 168 career games, he has hit .252/.280/.355 with four home runs and 46 RBIs.
