Cubs claim infielder Cody Ransom off waivers from San Diego
Infielder Brent Lillibridge designated for assignment
CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today claimed infielder Cody Ransom off waivers from the San Diego Padres. Infielder Brent Lillibridge has been designated for assignment. Ransom will wear uniform number one.
The 37-year-old Ransom has spent all or part of 11 major league seasons with San Francisco (2001-04), Houston (2007), the New York Yankees (2008-09), Philadelphia (2010), Arizona (2011-12), Milwaukee (2012) and San Diego (2013). The versatile Ransom has seen big league action at all four infield positions, including 146 games at shortstop, 84 games at third base, 34 games at second base and 24 games at first base.
Ransom split the 2012 campaign between Arizona and Milwaukee, batting .220 (54-for-246) with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 42 RBI in 90 games. The right-handed batter and thrower posted a .312 on-base percentage, 92 points higher than his batting average, and a .411 slugging percentage for a .722 OPS. He began the 2013 campaign hitless in 11 at-bats for the Padres before being designated for assignment on April 12.
Ransom is a career .215 hitter (128-for-594) with 21 home runs and 85 RBI in 326 big league games. He has a .302 on-base percentage and a .387 slugging percentage.
Lillibridge batted .042 (1-for-24) in nine games for the Cubs this season.
