Umpire Vanover leaves game with head injury
Removed in third inning after taking Trumbo foul tip off mask in first
ANAHEIM -- Home plate umpire Larry Vanover left the game in the top of the third inning with a possible concussion after taking a foul tip off his mask in the first inning of a game between the Angels and Orioles at Angel Stadium.
Vanover was hit in the mask by a Mark Trumbo foul tip in the bottom of the first, but remained in the game for another inning before being removed.
Manny Gonzalez, who started the game as the second base umpire, took over behind the plate in the top of the third after a brief delay to allow him to put on home-plate gear.
