Mariners sign RHP Logan Kensing and catcher Manny Piña as Minor League free agents with invitations to Major League Spring Training
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the club has signed right-handed pitcher Logan Kensing and catcher Manny Piña as minor league free agents and invited them to Major League Spring Training.
Kensing, 31, has appeared in parts of seven seasons in the Majors Leagues with the Marlins (2004-2009), Nationals (2009) and Rockies (2013). He battled his way back to the Majors last season after a pair of shoulder surgeries in 2010, appearing in one game with the Colorado Rockies. He was originally selected by the Marlins in the 2nd round of the 2003 June Draft out of Texas A&M University.
Piña, 26, has split his professional career in the Texas and Kansas City organizations. He has seen action in 5 Major League games with the Royals in 2011 and 2012. He split last season with AA Northwest Arkansas and AAA Omaha, combining to bat .228 (68x298) with 7 home runs and 38 RBI. He threw out 32 of 79 attempted base stealers (40.5%). He was originally signed by Texas as a non-drafted free agent on Sept. 30, 2004.
The Mariners Spring Training roster is currently at 61 players (40 roster, 21 non-roster), including 30 pitchers (12 non-roster), 7 catchers (4 non-roster), 14 infielders (4 non-roster) and 10 outfielders (1 non-roster).
Pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in Peoria, AZ on Feb. 12 (physicals) and holds its first workout Feb. 13. Position players are scheduled to report for physicals Feb. 17 and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 18.
