Finalists announced for Milwaukee Brewers as part of MLB, Target and Time Inc.'s 'PEOPLE' "All-Star Teachers" program to honor teachers

Major League Baseball, Target Corp (NYSE: TGT) and PEOPLE today announced the 90 finalists in the "Target Presents PEOPLE All-Star Teachers" campaign, which celebrates remarkable current and retired teachers who make an impact on the lives of their students and communities. The three finalists for the Milwaukee Brewers include Samuel Huber, Tracy Tate and Eric Vander Loop. Fans are encouraged to visit AllStarTeachers.com to vote on their favorite stories through June 29th.
One winner from each of the 30 MLB Clubs will be included in All-Star Week activities and recognized during the pre-game ceremony of the 2014 MLB All-Star Game on FOX. An "All-Star Teacher" winner will be featured in 'PEOPLE' during the week of the MLB All-Star Game.
Huber is a physical education teacher at Kennedy Elementary in Grafton, where he founded the Eco Runner movement and is a spokesman for environmentalism and personal responsibility. Huber was named UW-Green Bay's Outstanding Alumni in 2010, and holds bachelor of arts degrees in both education and environmental policy and planning. He leads students in an annual Eco Walk and coaches Grafton High School Freshman golf and intramurals. Huber founded a district-wide geocaching program, combining science, gym and literacy. He is launching Kids Fit 52, partnering with local businesses, with a new activity each week to fit interests and abilities. With weekly goals, students are fitness ambassadors to their family and community. Individual focus on the whole-student is what makes Huber successful. As gym teacher, he sees each student in the school. Last year, when a second-grade student had behavioral issues, the gym was a place to expel energy. Huber developed a rapport with him, and the student became his "special helper," eagerly assisting in gym. The child's self-esteem, attention, and academics all benefited positively.
Tate is the head of the Business Department at Oconto Falls High School in Oconto Falls. She attended UW-Stout, majored in business education and marketing, minored in business administration, and specialized in human development. She later attended UW-Madison and earned her master's degree in educational leadership. Tate taught at Marion High School for one year before earning the job as the business education teacher at Oconto Falls High School where she has taught for nine years. As soon as Tracy began teaching at OFHS, she became the Oconto Falls Future Business Leaders of America local chapter advisor. She has had students qualify for the FBLA National Leadership Conference each of the nine years she has been there. She has also had five students serve as a Wisconsin state officer. Tate is an outstanding teacher because she does everything in her power to motivate her students.
Vander Loop is a teacher at Woodland Elementary in Appleton. He and his wife Karen both teach at Woodland School. His parents are both hard-working, inspiring, honest, and humble, and that describes Eric, too. His three passions are family, teaching and baseball. Above and beyond the core subjects, he gives his students the mentality that they can make a difference in the world, even in the fifth grade. Vander Loop has a master's degree in education and has been in teaching for 15 years. In addition, he has coached high school baseball for seven years. This summer he will qualify to teach other teachers to re-certify and re-energize. Vander Loop started a River Studies Summer Fishing Program 15 years ago for youth in the district, and he has raised funds every year so most of the materials are provided free of charge. The "Unless" program was started six years ago after hearing that a student's mother and Vander Loop's friend both had Stage 4 lung cancer. The students asked what they could do to help. The "Unless" motto comes from Dr. Seuss: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." That led to the creation of his "Unless" efforts, which has raised $86,000 to date.
Target presents "PEOPLE All-Star Teachers" is just one part of Target, MLB and PEOPLE's effort to celebrate teachers and raise awareness about the importance of education this baseball season.
