Mariners release John Olerud; Pat Borders accepts option to AAA Tacoma
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi today announced that the Mariners have released John Olerud. Olerud was designated for assignment on July 15.

Bavasi also announced today that catcher Pat Borders, who was also designated for assignment on July 15, has informed the Mariners that he will accept an option to AAA Tacoma. With the return of Borders, the Mariners Major League (40-man) roster now stands at 39 players.

"We investigated a lot of different potential opportunities for John, but were not able to find a good match within the 10 days we had to trade him," Bavasi said. "We wish John and his family only the best and thank him for everything he did for the Mariners organization."

Olerud, 35, appeared in 77 games with the Mariners this season, hitting .245 (64x261) with 13 doubles, 5 home runs and 22 RBI. He was originally signed by the Mariners as a free agent on Dec. 7, 1999. In his Mariners career, he hit .285 with 164 doubles, 72 HR and 405 RBI in 701 games.

Borders, 41, hit .189 in 19 games with Seattle, including hitting .318 since June 11 (7x22) with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base. He hit .233 (14x60) with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI with the Rainiers this season. Borders is in his 22nd season in pro baseball and has appeared in the Majors with Toronto, Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, California, Chicago (AL), Cleveland and Seattle. He's played in four post-seasons (1989, 1991, 1992, 1993) and was the World Series MVP in 1992.
