Mariners place RHP Jeff Nelson on bereavement list
Select contracts of RHP Jeff Harris and RHP Masao Kida
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi today announced that the Mariners have placed right-handed pitcher Jeff Nelson on the bereavement list. The club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jeff Harris from triple-A Tacoma to take his spot on the roster. In addition, the club has selected right-handed pitcher Masao Kida from Tacoma to take Ryan Franklin's spot on the roster.
Nelson will remain in Seattle to attend to family issues surrounding the passing of his father-in-law.
Harris, 31, was 10-2 with a 2.62 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 26 games, 10 starts combined between double-A San Antonio and triple-A Tacoma this season. He began the season with San Antonio appearing in 11 games. He held opponents to a .197 average, while striking out 31 and walking eight in 34 1/3 innings. Harris struck out a season-high 11 batters in 5 2/3 innings in his first start of the season on May 4. He was promoted to Tacoma on May 23, appearing in 15 games. Harris made seven relief appearances before moving to the starting rotation on June 19. He has allowed two runs or less in six of his eight starts with the Rainiers. Harris was signed by the Mariners as a minor league free agent on December 22, 2004.
Kida, 36, was 3-5 with 17 saves and 3.61 ERA in 42 relief appearances with triple-A Tacoma this season. He is currently fourth in the Pacific Coast League in saves. In his last 21 relief appearances, since June 9, Kida is 3-1 with 13 saves and a 1.08 ERA (25 IP, 3 ER). Kida was named PCL Pitcher of the Week, June 13-20, after picking up saves in five of his Tacoma's seven games, including back-to-back saves on both June 13-14 and June 16-17. In 6.0 innings, he allowed just one walk and faced the minimum 18 hitters. He was selected to the PCL All-Star team, tossing 2/3 of an inning allowing one run while walking two and striking out one. Kida was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 1, 2004.
