MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Seattle Mariners executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations Bill Bavasi announced tonight that the Mariners have asked waivers on infielder Scott Spiezio for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

Spiezio, 32 (turns 33 Sept. 21), hit .064 (3-for-47) with one home run and one RBI over 29 games for Seattle in 2005. Spiezio was 3-for-14 as a pinch-hitter with one home run and one RBI.

The switch-hitting Spiezio missed 62 games from April 20-July 1 with a strained left oblique muscle. He was 3-for-30 batting left-handed this season, 0-for-17 right-handed.

Seattle signed Spiezio as a free agent on Dec. 17, 2003. He batted a combined .198 (82-for-414) with 13 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 42 RBI in two seasons (141 games) with the Mariners.

Spiezio has a career batting average of .253 with 102 home runs and 466 RBIs over 10 Major League seasons (1,073 games) with Oakland (1996-99), the Angels (2000-2003) and Seattle (2004-2005).
