Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the club has selected right-handed pitcher Jorge Campillo from triple-A Tacoma and placed right-handed pitcher Cha Seung Baek on the 60-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right triceps. Campillo, wearing #66, will be available for tonight's game against the Oakland Athletics.
Campillo, 28, has been rehabilitating since undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on Sept. 23, 2005. He was outrighted to triple-A Tacoma Oct. 12, 2005 and began the 2006 season on the disabled list. He was on a rehabilitation assignment with the Peoria Mariners (Rookie League) from July 17 to August 11. Campillo was reinstated from the disabled list and transferred to single-A Inland Empire on August 11. He was then transferred to the double-A San Antonio Missions on August 22 after appearing in two games with Inland Empire. In two starts for San Antonio, Campillo was 2-0, 2.53 (3 ER/10.2 IP). He last pitched on Sept. 2 in the Missions' 7-2 win over Corpus Christi.
A native of Tijuana, Mexico, Campillo pitched in two games for Seattle in 2005. He made his Major League debut on May 20 in relief vs. San Diego, working one scoreless inning. He pitched just one inning in his first Major League start on Aug. 2 at Detroit, due to a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Baek, 26, made six starts for the Mariners this season after being selected from Tacoma on August 22. He was 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA in those six games. In 24 starts with Tacoma, he was 12-4, 3.00 (49ER/147.0IP). He was named "King of the Hill," an award for the Rainiers' best pitcher as chosen by the coaching staff.
