SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners selected right-handed pitcher Phillippe Aumont with their first selection (11th overall pick) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Vice President of Scouting Bob Fontaine announced today.
"We are very excited to add one of the premier arms in this draft to our organization," Fontaine said. "Phillippe is a power pitcher and we were surprised we got him where we did in the draft. With development, we are confident he will be able to contribute to the success of our organization very quickly."
Aumont, 18, is a native of Gatineau, Quebec (Ecole Du Versant). He has starred for the Canadian Junior National Team and was voted by Perfect Game as the Canada East Player of the Year. He was rated by Baseball America as one of the top right-handed pitchers heading into the 2007 Draft, including the No. 9 high school prospect and the top Canadian prospect.
During the spring, he worked 2.0 scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves extended spring training team, striking out four. Aumont also starred for Team Canada at the 2006 World Junior AAA Championships in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. He was a top prospect in the 2006 Cape Cod High School Classic and East Coast Showcase last summer.
The 6-7, 225-pound right-handed pitcher becomes the highest Canadian to be selected in the first round of the MLB draft since LHP Adam Loewen was selected 4th overall by Baltimore and LHP Jeff Francis was selected 9th overall by Colorado in 2002. Aumont is also the first native of Quebec to be selected in the first round since OF Ntema Ndungidi was a supplemental first round pick of the Orioles in 1997.
