Felix Hernandex Named American League Pitcher of the Month
Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for June, marking the first monthly honor of his career.
In six starts last month, Hernandez posted a perfect 3-0 record with a 0.94 ERA through 38.1 innings,
while allowing just four earned runs with 35 strikeouts. The Mariners ace had the lowest ERA of all Major
League pitchers with over 20 innings pitched in the month of June. On June 16th, the 23-year-old threw a
two-hit complete-game shutout en route to a 5-0 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. The outing
marked Felix's sixth career complete game and his third career shutout. The Valencia, Venezuela native
also notched 20 consecutive scoreless innings from June 10th - June 21st. His final June start came against
the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, where he went 8.0 innings, giving up no earned runs and
notching nine strikeouts. Entering play today, Felix is 8-3 with a 2.54 ERA through 16 starts this season,
and he currently ranks fourth in the American League with 107 strikeouts. He is 11-2 (.846) with a 2.55
ERA (37 ER, 130.1 IP) in 19 career June starts.
Others receiving consideration were Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan (0.00 ERA, 11.2 IP, 11 SV, 18
SO), Josh Beckett (4-1, 1.51 ERA, 35.2 IP, 1 CG, 35 SO) of the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers righthander
Kevin Millwood (4-1, 1.30 ERA, 34.2 IP, 27 SO).
Felix Hernandez will receive a specially designed trophy and a Sharp Aquos television to commemorate
his Pitcher of the Month performance.
