Mariners make five roster moves
Four players outrighted off roster; LHP Justin Thomas claimed by Pirates
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik today announced the following roster moves:
- LHP Cesar Jimenez activated from 60-day disabled list & outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
- INF Bryan LaHair outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
- RHP Randy Messenger outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
- RHP Marwin Vega outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
- LHP Justin Thomas claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
As a result of today's roster moves, the Mariners Major League, 40-man roster now stands at 35 players.
LaHair, Messenger and Jimenez are eligible for minor league (six year) free agency.
Jimenez, 24 (turns 25 Nov. 12), spent the entire 2009 season on the Major League disabled list with biceps tendonitis. He made rehabilitation assignment appearances with the Arizona League Mariners (0-1, 3.00 in 5 games) and the AAA Tacoma Rainiers (0-1, 4.70 in 8 games). He had surgery to repair a torn labrum on Sept. 9.
LaHair, 26 (turns 27 Nov. 5), spent all of last season with Tacoma. He hit .289 with 28 doubles, 2 triples, 26 home runs and 85 RBI in 121 games with the Rainiers this season.
Messenger, 28, spent most of the season with Tacoma (0-2, with 25 saves and a 2.86 ERA in 52 games), but also appeared in 12 games in Seattle. With the Mariners, he was 0-1, 4.35 and did not allow a run in 8 of 12 games.
Vega, 23, split the 2009 season between High Desert (A) and West Tenn (AA). He was 0-0, 15.12 in 7 games with High Desert and 0-3 with 1 save and a 5.27 in 19 games with West Tenn.
Thomas, 25, spent the 2009 season with Tacoma, posting a 2-4, 4.48 mark and collecting 6 saves in 53 games for the Rainiers.
