Safeco Field gets state-of-the-art LED Out of Town scoreboard
Energy-efficient full-color board will have high-tech features and richer content
One of the largest electronic display boards at Safeco Field, the Out of Town scoreboard, is being replaced by the Seattle Mariners with a new energy efficient LED board that will have full-color animation capabilities and use only about one-tenth of the energy of the old board.
The scoreboard location is unchanged, above the bullpens in left field. The old board used incandescent bulbs and a cooling system that was in operation 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. On average, the old scoreboard used about 1.2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) each year. The new board, which uses light emitting diode (LED) technology, will use about 130,000 total kWh per year.
LED scoreboards use bundles of green, blue and red lights to create full-color, high-resolution, high-clarity images. LED lights, in addition to being much more energy efficient, are also more reliable and longer lasting than incandescent lights.
The Safeco Field LED scoreboard will be roughly the same size as the previous board, 99-feet, 4-inches wide by 11-feet, 6.5-inches high. It covers about 1,100 square feet. As with the old Out of Town scoreboard, the new panel will feature scores of Major League Baseball games in progress. Driven by ANC Sports Enterprises' patent-pending VisionSoft™ operating system, it will be possible to display additional information about each game such as current pitcher, batter, outs and runners on base.
"Scoreboard watching is a time-honored tradition in baseball, and this new technology lets us give fans a lot more information about the games being played in other ballparks. Even if you're not part of a fantasy baseball league, we think you'll appreciate the level of detail we will now be able to share with the fans, all in real-time," said Bob Aylward, Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President -- Business Operations.
Installation of the new board is by ANC Sports Enterprises, the company that also provides Safeco Field with its homeplate rotational signage. The board features Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision™. Demolition of the old board and installation of the new scoreboard began in early February. The new board is expected to be fully functional by mid-March. The Mariners Home Opener is Monday, April 12, against the Oakland Athletics.
"We are excited to expand our relationship with the Seattle Mariners by installing this state-of-the-art display at Safeco Field," said Jerome Cifarelli, president and chief executive officer of ANC Sports Enterprises. "We look forward to partnering with the Mariners to develop additional stadium features that will enhance the fan experience over the next few years."
In addition to Safeco Field, ANC Sports Enterprises and Mitsubishi Electric have collaborated on signage displays at Portland's Rose Garden, the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Washington Nationals ballpark, Washington DC's Verizon Center and the Sommet Center in Nashville. ANC's unique 3D VisionSOFT interface will distribute uncompressed visuals on the Diamond Vision screens providing Mariners fans with the clearest visuals possible.
