SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that right-handed pitcher Ricky Orta has been placed on waivers for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.
Today's roster move, along with the selection of infielder Josh Wilson and outfielder Ryan Langerhans and the release of outfielder Eric Byrnes, leaves the Mariners Major League, 40-man roster at 40 players.
Orta, 25, appeared in two games (0-0, 10.80) with the Mariners at spring training this year. He was optioned to AA West Tenn on March 16, and was placed on the disabled list on April 8. He did not appear in a game for West Tenn this season.
Orta was the Mariners fourth round selection in the 2006 June Draft. He has a career minor league record of 14-18 with 3 saves and a 4.47 earned run average.
