Batista eyes personal milestone

Seattle (60-48) vs. Boston (67-43), 1:05 p.m. PT

Directly in the midst of a playoff push, the Mariners' Miguel Batista is pushing for a milestone of his own.

A win against the Red Sox would be Batista's 12th of the season, which would be a new career high for the 36-year-old righty. He already leads the team with 12 quality starts, and has allowed three-or-fewer earned runs in 15 of 21 starts this season.

He has steadily improved throughout the season, lowering his ERA from 6.98 on May 12 to its current state of 4.23. Batista earned his 11th win of the season Monday after holding the Angels scoreless on four hits over seven innings.

Manager John McLaren said Adam Jones is expected to play center field for Ichiro Suzuki, who will be used as the designated hitter. Also, everyday second baseman Jose Lopez may receive the day off, in which the usual DH, Jose Vidro, would start at second base.

Pitching matchup
SEA: RHP Miguel Batista (11-7, 4.23 ERA)
Batista has not started against the Red Sox since Aug. 24, 2004, when he took a loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. His last appearance against Boston was on Sept. 29, 2005, when he allowed one run in one-third of an inning while with the Blue Jays.

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (13-5, 3.41 ERA)
Beckett is 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners, including one this season at Fenway Park in Boston on April 10. Beckett allowed just one run on two hits while striking out eight over seven innings in a 14-3 Red Sox win, although Sunday marks his first appearance in Safeco Field.

Player to watch
The Mariners hit just .243 as a team against Beckett, but none have had more success than Ben Broussard. He has faced Beckett just two times, and hit a home run off him in each at bat, totaling five RBIs.
