Seattle prospect has surgery on leg

Infielder Triunfel injured sliding into second base on Friday

SEATTLE -- Infielder Carlos Triunfel, rated as one of the Mariners' top prospects, underwent surgery on his left ankle and leg on Wednesday and it will be at least four months before he can return to baseball activities.

The surgery was performed by Mariners team medical director, Dr. Edward Khalfayan. He was assisted by Dr. Martin Mankey, a foot and ankle specialist. Triunfel will begin his rehabilitation from surgery in Seattle in approximately two days.

The 19-year-old from the Dominican Republic, playing for Double-A West Tennessee, injured his left leg sliding into second base last Friday. He suffered ligament damage in his left ankle and fractured the fibula in his left leg.

Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006, Triunfel played for Class A High Desert (California League) last season, batting .287 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs. He also played in the Arizona Fall League.
