Sweeney has multi-homer game for Mariners
By Mike McCall / MLB.com
Through his first four at-bats, Sweeney was 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two home runs.
He put the cherry on top of Seattle's seven-run second inning by cranking a 1-1 pitch off the new out-of-town scoreboard above the Padres' bullpen. That went for a three-run shot to make the score 7-2, but he wasn't done yet.
Franklin Gutierrez doubled in the fourth, and Sweeney followed by golfing a breaking ball over the left-field wall for a two-run shot that made it 10-4. That put the Mariners in double-digits for just the second time this season. They last did so in an 11-3 win against Detroit on April 16.
It also made Sweeney the first Mariner to go deep twice in a game this season. Catcher Josh Bard joined in the fun with a solo homer in the third, giving Seattle its third three-homer game of the year.
Then, with two on and no outs in the fifth, the Padres brought in reliever Adam Russell to face Sweeney, but it didn't make much difference, as he slapped an RBI single up the middle to make it 14-4.
