Mariners recall RHP Yoervis Medina from AAA Tacoma

Medina replaces RHP Stephen Pryor, who was placed on the 15-day DL yesterday

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Yoervis Medina from Triples-A Tacoma. Medina replaces RHP Stephen Pryor, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a tear in his right latissimus dorsi muscle.

Medina (#31) will be in uniform and available for tonight's game vs. Detroit Tigers (7:10 pm PT) at Safeco Field. He will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.

Medina, 24, is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA (1 ER, 6.0 IP) in 4 relief appearances with the Rainiers so far in 2013. He has walked 3 batters and struck out 7 in 6.0 innings. The right-hander has limited opponents to a .111 (2x18) average, including retiring all 8 right-handed batters he has faced.

In 2012, Medina went 5-5 with 5 saves and a 3.25 ERA (25 ER, 69.1 IP) in 46 games (1 start) with Double-A Jackson. He made a career-high 45 relief appearances after spending the previous three seasons nearly exclusively as a starter (55G/52 GS).

Medina was originally signed as a non-drafted International free agent on July 25, 2005. In eight seasons in the Mariners organization, he is 29-35 with a 3.84 ERA (212 ER, 497.0 IP) in 155 games, 64 starts.
