Mariners lose challenge as out call is confirmed

SEATTLE -- An out call on a close play at first base was confirmed by replay following a Mariners challenge during the eighth inning of their 5-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday at Safeco Field.

With no outs, runners on first and second and the Mariners leading, 4-1, Seattle utility player Willie Bloomquist laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Reliever Ben Rowen fielded the ball and threw to first baseman Brad Snyder, barely beating Bloomquist to the bag. After first base umpire Gerry Davis ruled Bloomquist out, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon walked out of the dugout and asked for the play to be reviewed.

Following a brief look, the crew ruled that Bloomquist was indeed out.
