Umps confirm call at plate after review in Houston

HOUSTON -- A close play at the plate in the sixth inning of Tuesday's game with the Astros led to a Crew Chief Review, but the replay confirmed the out call on Mariners baserunner Dustin Ackley after he was tagged by catcher Jason Castro.

With one out and runners and first and third, Ackley tried to score on a chopper to first base by James Jones, but was tagged out by Castro on the throw home from Jon Singleton.

Castro blocked the inside half of the plate and tagged Ackley just before he slid home. The umpires called for a Crew Chief Review to determine if there was a violation of the new collision rule, but the review showed no violation and the out call was confirmed.

The out was the second of the inning for Seattle, but the Mariners followed with six consecutive hits -- including five doubles -- to score seven runs in that frame and break open a 10-1 lead.
