Crew chief DeMuth exits game after collision

CHICAGO -- Second-base umpire Dana DeMuth exited Sunday's White Sox-Mariners games before the bottom of the fifth inning after colliding with Chicago second baseman Gordon Beckham in the top of the fifth.

Brad Miller singled just to the right of Beckham with one out in the fifth and made a wide turn around first, causing center fielder Adam Eaton to hurry his throw back into the infield. Beckham tried to retrieve the loose ball without Miller advancing and in the process ran into DeMuth.

No specific word was given as to why the crew chief left, aside from the collision. The game operated with Lance Barrett behind the plate, Ron Kulpa at first and Ed Hickox at third.
