The Royals opened the game with five straight hits, and they went on to score six runs in the first inning en route to a victory over the Mariners. Ross Gload and Tony Pena each had two RBIs, while Mark Grudzielanek added three hits. Gil Meche gave up three unearned runs over six innings.

Right-hander Jeff Weaver surrendered six runs on seven hits and one walk in one-third of an inning, and the Mariners were unable to climb out of the early hole in a loss to the Royals. Ichiro Suzuki knocked in two runs, while Jose Vidro and Raul Ibanez each collected three hits.
