The Mariners spoiled the A's home opener on the strength of a five-run attack in the second inning, punctuated by Yuniesky Betancourt's two-run double. The bullpen did its job, providing much-needed relief behind Ryan Rowland-Smith, who labored through 3 1/3 frames.
