|MLBPA Press Release|
The ratification process was conducted in accordance with the MLBPA's Constitution and By-Laws during the Union's annual Executive Board meeting, which concluded today in Irving, Texas.
Weiner also announced the Executive Board's election of Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles) to the position of association representative and Carlos Villanueva (Toronto Blue Jays) as alternate association representative. Guthrie joins Curtis Granderson (NY Yankees) as association representative, and Villanueva joins Dave Bush (free agent) as an alternate. Chris Capuano (free agent), Aaron Heilman (free agent), Ross Ohlendorf (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Kevin Slowey (Minnesota Twins) retained their positions as the Association's pension representatives and alternates.
"The Board's decisive action here is a culmination of the consistent involvement of the players during this round of bargaining. Ratification comes as no surprise, as players have been engaged heavily throughout the process -- constructing proposals, formulating strategy and participating in negotiating sessions," stated Weiner.
"I want to thank my fellow Executive Board members and members of the Union's negotiating committee for their efforts throughout the bargaining process," said Granderson. "I'm sure I speak for most players in saying that I look forward to playing under the terms of our new labor contracts. The bargaining parties worked very hard to reach agreement on issues of significant importance to them, and the results should position the sport well for future success on and off the field."
"Ratification of the agreements doesn't signify an end, but rather the beginning of a new and exciting era for baseball players, owners and fans," commented Guthrie. "The changes in our labor contracts contain improvements for all classes of players, and I'm proud to have been part of the process. I also want to thank all players for once again demonstrating their passion and commitment to their fellow Union members during this round of bargaining."
