ALS Certified Center of Excellence, Allegheny Health Network

Established in 2003 at Allegheny General Hospital, the AHN ALS Center provides diagnostic and multidisciplinary treatment and care for patients diagnosed with ALS. In 2014, the National ALS Association designated the AGH clinic as a "Certified Center of Excellence." It is one of only 49 Centers of Excellence in the US and is the ONLY one in Western PA. The Center's mission is to define, establish and support a national standard of care in the management of ALS. It encourages and provides state-of-the-art care and clinical management of ALS.

Under the direction of Dr. Sandeep Rana, a neurologist who specializes in motor neuron diseases, the Center is designed for people who require treatment from many specialists. For these patients, the Center offers the ability to receive many types of care in the same place and, in some cases, during the same visit. The Center allows the specialists to confer and coordinate treatment, leading to decisions based on sound information and feedback.

ALS Association, Western Pennsylvania Chapter

The local chapter of the ALS Association was founded in 1982 with a mission to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through research and advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

As one of 49 regional offices of the ALS Association, the Western PA Chapter serves 31 counties and approximately 300 families living with ALS at any given time. The Association works hard to promote and help individuals living with ALS maintain their independence by providing cutting edge equipment and technology to improve quality of life for the individual and the entire family.

LiveLikeLou was started by Neil and Suzanne Alexander shortly following his diagnosis with ALS in June 2011. Neil was a life-long Pirates and baseball fan, and so he preferred to refer to ALS as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." He and Suzanne created, named for Gehrig, to honor the example he set for all people living with ALS. The foundation's mission is to raise public awareness about ALS, to help finance critical medical research and to provide urgently-needed support for victims and their families in Western Pennsylvania.

Neil waged a courageous battle for 1,365 days, but passed away at the all-too-young age of 49 on March 24, 2015. In addition to Suzanne, he is survived by his remarkable children Abby and Patrick. Suzanne is honoring Neil's memory by continuing the work they started together with the LiveLikeLou Fund.
