MCA HEALTH AND
FITNESS ALL-STARS

Professional baseball players know the importance of maintaining their fitness level. Children need help to learn that staying active and eating the right things can make them better baseball players, or computer programmers, or whatever they like to do.

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation teamed up with Medical Center of Arlington to create fitness themed learning aids for Arlington Independent School District fifth graders. The Texas Rangers MCA Fitness All-Stars program uses team mascot Rangers Captain as a catalyst to get kids excited about the types of activities that lead to long term healthy lifestyles. Through texasrangers.com, kids and parents who may not have had the chance to watch the short videos in class can watch them together here.

Parents: Look for the printed material below with ideas you and your child's teachers can use to help kids have fun while making themselves healthier. Medical Center of Arlington's staff prepared these educational materials to reinforce and expand upon the lessons taught in the videos.

Basics of Cardiovascular Exercise
Warmup
Getting your heart working is what it's all about, and host B.J. Cleveland helps Rangers Captain understand how to benefit the most from his exercise. A dot race helps make the point - root for your favorite color.

Getting muscles ready for exercise can help folks of all ages avoid injury. B.J. has a special way of getting Rangers Captain "fired up" about the notion. Hijinks and one dot race included.

Strength Training

B.J. and Rangers Captain enlist the help of MCA expert Regan to learn how kids can get stronger without weights. The mascot has another word for "strength," which he reveals at the end of the video.

MCA registered dietician Meredith gives B.J. and Rangers Captain simple, easy to understand tips about choosing what foods to eat. Take it with you the next time you eat out (the video, not the mascot, whose table manners frankly leave something to be desired).

Arlington Fire Department Fitness Tips
The Arlington Fire Department assists the Rangers and MCA in communicating healthy messages to kids. Because firefighters' jobs require a high level of physical conditioning, they help explain that fitness has benefits for everyone, not just professional athletes. Recently, Rangers Strength and Conditioning Coach Jose Vazquez visited an Arlington Fire Station to offer tips on staying in shape. Much of his advice could apply to busy parents, too.

The Texas Rangers MCA Fitness All-Stars project is a joint outreach vehicle of the Medical Center of Arlington, the Arlington Independent School District, and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.

Rangers Captain is the official mascot of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club, and, he asked us to point out, an excellent dancer. Medical Center of Arlington is the Official Hospital of the Texas Rangers and, they asked us to point out, an excellent place to rehabilitate any injuries sustained while dancing on dugouts.
